Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree — a practical beginner's guide

New to the Land of Shadow? Here's how to survive the DLC's first hours, avoid common mistakes, and find the scadutree fragments you'll need.

You beat the base game, you're level 150, and you step into the Land of Shadow feeling unstoppable. Ten minutes later a horned knight turns you into paste. Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't care about your main-game build — it has its own rules, and learning them is the difference between a brutal wall and a great expansion.

The scadutree system is not optional

The single most important mechanic in the DLC is scadutree fragments. These are collectibles scattered across the Land of Shadow that raise your scadutree blessing, which scales your damage dealt and reduces damage taken inside the DLC only. Your character level and weapon upgrades matter far less than this number.

  • Grab every fragment you see. They look like glowing golden shards at the base of small statues. The first few are close to the starting area.
  • Don't hoard them. Fragments are spent automatically when you rest at a grace site — there's no menu, no currency, no downside.
  • If a boss feels impossible, you're probably under-blessed. Going from blessing level 3 to 6 can change a fight from hopeless to fair. Explore before you rematch.
  • Revered spirit ashes are the companion system for your summons — same idea, separate collectible. Upgrade your favorite ash early.

A common beginner mistake is treating the DLC like a level-gated area. It isn't. A level 120 character with blessing 8 will outperform a level 180 character with blessing 2 by a wide margin.

Don't rush the main path

The Land of Shadow is dense and vertical. The road to the first legacy dungeon is obvious, but the map is full of side paths, hidden caves, and optional areas that hold fragments and new weapons.

  • Follow the glowing crosses. They mark significant sites and often lead toward fragments or NPCs.
  • Look up and down. Cliffs, rooftops, and ravines hide more than the main roads. If you see a ledge you can drop to, there's probably something there.
  • Talk to every NPC twice. Several questlines in the DLC are easy to break by progressing too far in one area before finishing another. If an NPC repeats themselves, you've exhausted their current dialogue.

The map is misleading — in a good way

The overworld map shows the general shape of the land, but it doesn't show elevation. A path that looks like a short walk on the map might be a cliff you can't climb, or a ravine you need to circle. Trust your eyes in the world, not the map screen.

New weapon types worth trying

The DLC adds several weapon categories, and two stand out for beginners:

  • Great katanas — long reach, strong stagger, and a moveset that rewards patient timing. The Great Katana found early is a solid pickup even if you don't main it.
  • Thrusting shields — a shield you can attack with. They're forgiving, let you keep guard up while poking, and pair well with a spear or thrusting sword in the other hand.

You don't need to respec to use them. If you've been running the same build since Limgrave, the DLC is a good excuse to experiment — upgrade materials are plentiful.

Common mistakes that will get you killed

  • Ignoring the blessing level. Covered above, but it bears repeating: this is the number one cause of frustration.
  • Fighting every enemy. The Land of Shadow is packed with tough mobs. Running past them is a legitimate strategy, especially on the way back to a boss.
  • Skipping the new consumables. The DLC adds throwing pots and perfumes that scale with your blessing and hit hard. They're not just flavor.
  • Forgetting about your flask upgrades. New Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears are hidden in the DLC too. A few extra flask charges make long boss fights survivable.
  • Not using spirit ashes. Some players avoid summons out of pride. In the DLC, they're tuned to be useful. Use them.

Hidden features and quality-of-life details

  • The new quick-use menu for consumables is easy to miss. Check your inventory settings — you can assign multiple items to a single button hold.
  • Some bosses have weak points that aren't obvious. Watch for glowing spots or armor gaps; hitting them staggers faster.
  • The DLC remembers your base-game progress. If you finished certain NPC questlines in the main game, you may get different dialogue or rewards here. It's worth revisiting old locations if you're stuck.
  • Fragments respawn in New Game Plus, but your blessing level carries over. Don't worry about "wasting" them.

A concrete next step

Before you fight the first major boss, spend twenty minutes hunting fragments in the starting region. Open your map, look for the glowing crosses, and follow every side path you can see. Then rest at a grace, check your blessing level, and only then head for the dungeon. If you want a visual reference, search for a fragment location guide for the Gravesite Plain — it's the fastest way to get your blessing to a comfortable level without spoiling the rest of the DLC.
