Final Fantasy 16 Beginner's Guide: Essential Tips, Mechanics, and Hidden Features

New to Final Fantasy 16? Our beginner's guide covers combat mechanics, ability points, crafting, and hidden features to help you master Valisthea.

Start with the action-focused mode (but don't ignore the story)

Final Fantasy 16 opens with a choice: Action Focused or Story Focused. Pick Action Focused if you want the full combat experience. You can always equip the Timely Accessories later if a fight gets too tough. Story Focused mode auto-equips them, but you can remove them for a tougher challenge.

Don't skip the Active Time Lore feature. Hold the touchpad (or L2/R2 on Xbox) during any cutscene to see contextual info about characters, factions, and locations. It's a lifesaver for keeping track of Valisthea's dense politics.

Master the basics of Clive's combat

Combat in FF16 is all about staggering enemies and managing cooldowns. Here's what you need to know:

  • Will gauge: The yellow bar under an enemy's HP. Deplete it to stagger them, making them take massive damage.
  • Eikonic abilities: Clive's attacks are tied to Eikons (summons). Each has a unique moveset and cooldown-based skills.
  • Precision dodge: Time a dodge just before an attack hits to slow time and open a counter window.
  • Burning Blade: Hold attack after a combo to unleash a fiery slash. Great for crowd control.
  • Lunge: Press attack while moving forward to close gaps quickly.

Ability points: where to invest early

You'll earn Ability Points (AP) from combat and quests. Don't spread them thin. Focus on a few key abilities:

  • Phoenix Shift (Garuda): A gap-closer that's also a dodge. Essential for mobility.
  • Heatwave (Phoenix): Counters ranged attacks and deals solid damage.
  • Rising Flames (Ifrit): High stagger damage. Upgrade it early.
  • Will-o'-the-Wykes (Ifrit): Creates orbs that damage enemies. Great for crowd control.

Respec is free, so experiment. But early on, stick to one or two Eikons to learn their flow.

Don't hoard your potions

Potions are cheap and plentiful. Use them liberally. You can also upgrade your potion potency at the apothecary in the Hideaway. The same goes for tonics that boost attack, defense, and stagger damage. Pop them before tough fights.

Crafting and upgrades: keep it simple

Blacksmith Blackthorne can craft and upgrade gear. You'll find crafting materials everywhere. Prioritize:

  • Weapons: Always upgrade when possible. Damage is king.
  • Armor: Balance defense and HP. Some pieces boost specific stats.
  • Accessories: These offer passive bonuses. Look for ones that reduce cooldowns or boost stagger damage.

Don't worry about saving materials. You'll get plenty.

Side quests: worth it for the rewards

FF16's side quests are often dismissed as MMO-style fetch tasks, but many offer meaningful rewards:

  • Renown: Earned from side quests and hunts. Trade it at the Patron's Whisper for valuable items.
  • Notorious Marks: Hunt boards in the Hideaway offer tough fights with big rewards. Do them when you're overleveled.
  • Character quests: These unlock new abilities and deepen relationships. Do them before the final act.

Hidden features you might miss

  • Photo Mode: Pause and enter photo mode to adjust angles, filters, and poses. Great for capturing Valisthea's beauty.
  • Training Mode: In the Hideaway, use the training dummy to practice combos and test abilities without risk.
  • Arcade Mode: Unlocked later, this lets you replay stages for high scores. A fun diversion.
  • Chrono Trials: Added in updates, these challenge you to beat stages under strict conditions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the Will gauge: Many new players wail on enemies without staggering them. Focus on depleting Will first.
  • Forgetting to upgrade abilities: AP is plentiful, but you must manually upgrade skills in the menu.
  • Skipping lore: Active Time Lore makes the story coherent. Use it.
  • Not using Torgal: Clive's wolf companion can heal you and deal damage. Command him with the D-pad.
  • Overlooking accessibility: Timely Accessories can help with dodging, combos, and healing. Use them if needed.

Exploration and secrets

Valisthea is full of hidden chests and optional areas. Look for glowing spots and side paths. Some of the best loot is off the beaten path. Also, return to earlier areas after story progress—new hunts and quests appear.

Final tips for new players

  • Take breaks: The game is long. Don't burn out.
  • Experiment with Eikons: Each plays differently. Find your favorites.
  • Upgrade your potions: You can carry more and they heal more.
  • Do hunts: They're optional but rewarding.
  • Enjoy the story: It's a wild ride.

Now that you're armed with these tips, jump back into Valisthea. Try focusing on staggering enemies and using Phoenix Shift to close gaps. If you're stuck, equip a Timely Accessory or two. And when you're ready for a challenge, tackle the Notorious Marks. For more help, check out our guides on Eikon abilities and endgame content.
