Sony’s September State of Play delivered a packed broadcast filled with release dates, surprise reveals, and extended gameplay looks. The show closed with an extended look at Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII Revelation, confirming an October 22, 2026 release date with a demo available now. Other major highlights included the surprise announcement of Maneater 2 from TripWire, the reveal of Until Dawn 2 (co-developed with Dispatch’s AdHoc Studio), and release dates for Metro 2039 and Crimson Desert’s first expansion, Charting the Unknown.
The broadcast also unveiled two new limited-edition DualSense wireless controllers inspired by GTA 6, and Insomniac gave fans “one last look” at Marvel’s Wolverine ahead of its September 15 release. However, the show was notably dominated by high-profile no-shows, including God of War Laufey, Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and Media Molecule’s next project, leaving fans with plenty of questions.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. The demo, available now on PlayStation Store, covers the opening chapter of the game and allows players to carry over save data to the full release. Square Enix has confirmed that the game will feature an expanded world map, new combat mechanics, and a reimagined Gold Saucer. The release date of October 22 places it just a few weeks before GTA 6, a bold move that suggests Square Enix is confident in its fanbase.
Maneater 2 was a surprise reveal, as the original game launched in 2020 to mixed reviews but developed a cult following. The sequel promises a larger open world, more evolved shark abilities, and a new multiplayer mode. Until Dawn 2 is being co-developed by AdHoc Studio, known for Dispatch, and will reportedly feature a new cast of characters and a completely original story set in the same universe. Metro 2039 continues the post-apocalyptic survival series, with release set for early 2027.
The limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers will be available for preorder starting September 20, ahead of the game’s November 19 launch. They feature a Vice City-inspired color scheme and a textured grip. Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine will launch on September 15, and the final trailer showed off brutal combat, a mature tone, and appearances from classic X-Men characters. For PlayStation fans, the September State of Play was a mixed bag: plenty of release dates, but also notable absences that leave the 2027 lineup uncertain.
